My paranormal coming-of-age series, A Life of Death, just received yet another glowing review, this time from Mallory Heart Reviews. In it, Mallory said, “A LIFE OF DEATH is a stunner, a literate trove of paranormal, supernatural, moral integrity, lyrical prose in one can’t put down package.” That is true praise. You can read the whole review on her website at http://archiestandwoodsreviewsandwritings.blogspot.com. Or you can get your own copy of the Amazon e-book here. It is also available on most other e-book retailers.

Today is a sad day for science fiction and the writing and acting community as a whole. We must say goodbye to a part of our childhoods, a man who made us laugh, cry, and provided a fair and balanced look at the world and society through the Star Trek franchise. Goodbye, Leonard Nimoy. You will be missed, cherished for your contributions to society, and remembered. Live long and prosper.

To read the actual account of his life and death, here is the New York Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/27/arts/television/leonard-nimoy-spock-of-star-trek-dies-at-83.html?_r=0

Here is what Ramona Plant from the Paranormal and Horror Lovers Goodreads group had to say after reading her ARC of Book 1, To Kill a Priest:

“Weston is quickly becoming one of my favorites authors out there. This book is absolutely mind blowing and makes it impossible for you to put it down. This book is so unique and different from anything I have ever read.”

Dale Herring of The Geekdom of Gore just posted his personal review of A Life of Death, Book 2: The Golden Bulls, and I couldn’t be more excited.

When you send a novel to a book reviewer for an honest review, you really have no idea what their reaction will be. Book reviewers can be some of the harshest critics or the most adamant supporters, but it’s wonderful to read what they really think. For an author, it’s paramount to contact book reviewers and literary critics. Their posts go out to hundreds if not thousands of readers looking for the best recommendations on books to pick up.

So, without further ado, check out Dale Herring’s thoughts on book 2 of A Life of Death.

I am happy to announce a guest post on the Wag the Fox book blog. It’s about psychics and the supernatural–exploring the potential truths of ghosts and the paranormal. Paranormal books are all the rage right now, as are ghost hunting shows, but how much of that is real and how much speculation? Would you have abilities if you had the choice?

To read more, Wag the Fox!

I am happy to announce a new series that will be released serialized and later in two complete books.

The Priors is a tale of parallel worlds, child abduction, a black-ops agency fronting as priests, and the struggle to make amends for horrific past decisions. This fantasy tale includes vampires, sagging creatures known as the Pazzege’tuk who are linked to humans along a different evolutionary track, and human shifters who evolve in early childhood. With The Priors, nothing is as it seems.

Simon Critchell with S & S Creative did a wonderful job with the covers. And here they are for the first time. Part 1 is To Kill a Priest. Part 2 is titled To Kill an Assassin. Episode 1 of this thrilling chase begins Friday, December 19 and will be available for free on Barnes and Noble and similar sites.

A very thorough reader and book reviewer recently read A Life of Death and did something that impressed me. I’d never seen something like this done before, but it was really cool.

Glenda Bixler at Book Reader’s Heaven chose not only to review the book, but to also incorporate sections of the initial chapters, summarizing other parts and taking her fans on a journey into A Life of Death. She incorporated pictures representing key pieces from the novel and really did a wonderful job.

If you want a great experience and to learn about new books, this is one site you should bookmark and keep coming back to for your next read. Glenda is a wealth of information and full of surprises. Stop by Book Reader’s Heaven to start your next adventure.

Ever dreamed of something unsettling—sometimes horrifying, other times so vivid you feel like you’ve woken up from a memory, and still others that cause you to panic like a cornered rabbit?
I’m not that anxious of a person—pretty laid back if you know me—but last night was filled with one of those disturbing dreams that made me check to see if rabbit droppings were strewn from the window to my bedside. This isn’t the Matrix, but last night’s dream could easily have fit into the trilogy of movies. For me, sometimes dreams like that can lead to story ideas, but thus far I’ve got nothing. So, I thought I’d share what woke me up panicked repeatedly this Thanksgiving eve.
It started off on a good note, with a new high school English teaching job. I don’t know why, but my current job was at a BB-Q and burger joint that doubled as an indoor water park. (Don’t ask how or why. I don’t know. Just go with it.)
The school year started the very next day. Before the school day started, I was struggling to get my teaching supplies out of the back office of the BBQ joint—yes, beyond the water slides and spinning oversized waterpark castles. I half expected Kirby to come spurting out of one. While freaking out about being late to my first-period class, I arrived to discover I had forgotten an essential box. I’m not sure what it contained that I couldn’t do without, but I skipped out during class and went back to that soggy burger establishment.
When I arrived, somehow the waterpark had grown, the wading pool overtaking the entire center area with the cedar-sided restaurant lining the sides like a Wild West town in some uncanny carnival. Trekking through the knee-high waves, dozens of kids spun around on Rubbermaid castles, spraying me down like I was on fire. I somehow made it to the storage room for the box then ventured back out. It was insane! In seconds more castles sprouted up, drenching me and crowding in as I tried to make my way back to the entrance.
I never did find out how the first day of the job went or whether I got laid off, because the waves and water weighed me down more and more. I was slogging forward at just an inch a step. A deluge assaulted me from every angle, and I could barely catch a breath.
I finally awoke for the third and final time in two hours, my heart pounding in my chest like a metronome on fast forward. I honestly think there must have been something in the turkey this Thanksgiving, because that was one rollercoaster ride I never saw coming.

Some people say dreams are how your subconscious speaks to you, telling you what you’re going through or what’s stressing you. Although the study of dreams has intrigued me, I really don’t know what in the world this one might be saying. Any ideas?

I am happy to report another A Life of Death review from a great book site, Number the Stars. Tet begins by saying, A Life Of Death is a good combination of family drama, paranormal, action, and suspense.” To find out more, visit the site and see what all they had to say about this new paranormal mystery series.

Today was an exciting day. I don’t talk much about one side of my life on this blog, that of being a high school English teacher, but today was one where both the author and teaching sides came together. I spent the day immersed in the NCBLA In Search of Wonder conference in Perry, Ohio, with authors of varying experience levels, librarians and teachers from around the state. It was a diverse collection of literature lovers, new and old. Part of me felt like a kid again, finally making it to the equivalent of Disney World, while the author side got to pick the brains of elite members in the YA and children’s writing industry.
There were new authors like Jody Cassella, first-time published YA novelist of Thin Space, science fiction and fantasy author Mindee Arnett, and veteran authors and winners of various major awards like Katherine Paterson, Steven Kellogg, Nikki Grimes, and Chris Crutcher. There’s no way anyone could have grown up in the last 30 years without reading some of their books. It was great meeting authors who have found so much success and touched so many lives for the better.
Nikki Grimes

During the conference, I had the opportunity to see Nikki Grimes, winner of the Coretta Scott King award for Jazmin’s Notebook, speak from the heart about striving to bridge the racial gap between readers and chosen books. Her passion for writing stories and poetry was clear in her voice and face and certainly spoke to me. When another presenter followed and began reading poem excerpts from Grimes’ published works while the poet and author sat on stage behind her, her eyes closed—nostalgia and emotion floating behind her eyelids as the words echoed through the school theater. A small smile even played across her lips and cheeks. When love and passion are so easily visible, it’s difficult not to be astounded.

Steven Kellogg Speaking at
In Search of Wonder
Steven Kellogg, who wrote and illustrated children’s books like Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash, and many more, was a man so filled with enthusiasm that every other word brought an eruption of laughter from the audience. He’s great as a presenter, and I can only hope you get a chance to see him work. As a fan of his books as a child, it wasn’t to be missed.
Many people may know Chris Crutcher best for his YA novels Deadline, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, and The Crazy horse Electric Game.  Originally a therapist in Spokane, Washington, he began writing later and truly comes up with some of the best novels, and quotes. After talking about Deadline, he said something I could not forget, “If you want to make life important, shorten it.” The main character discovers he has Leukemia in the first 7 pages, hence the statement’s relevance.  He also said something that reminded me of a friend and Special Education/English teacher I know named Ed. After reading an excerpt where he compared a secondary character to an “evangelical senator,” he said, “Every once in a while you have to throw your politics in there.” I couldn’t help but chuckle, because it was certainly something Ed would say. The two even look alike, don’t they?

Katherine Paterson

Ending the conference was Katherine Paterson, best known for her Newberry Medal award winning novels Bridge to Terabithia and Jacob Have I Loved. Also a great speaker, I couldn’t help but enjoy her story about being a weird kid in North Carolina in fourth grade with another “weird, round kid” named Eugene who wanted to ultimately become a ballet dancer. In the 1940s, this was unheard of, but she later discovered that he succeeded, even performing in New York a great deal. A very spiritual woman, she spoke of how essential parents, teachers and librarians are to the future of our children, saying, “It is up to each one of us to be children’s word of hope made flesh.” Another of her novels, The Great Gilly Hopkins, is being made into what looks to be a wonderful movie and should be released soon.

Katherine Paterson Speaking at
In Search of Wonder
The NCBLA is doing great things for our children and adults alike. We were all children once and grew up with these wonderful books. I encourage you to see these authors present if you can and grab their books. They are certainly worth the time investment, no matter your age.
